Conceptualizing a future Bavarian-African education program on Africa – Survey results and “afriZert” Certificate Program

The Bavarian Office for Africa, and the Scientific Coordination Office (WKS) Bavaria-Africa, in collaboration with the Institute of African Studies at the University of Bayreuth conducted a expert survey to inform the conceptualization of the innovative certificate program on Africa – “afriZert”.

With a volume of 40 credit points (ECTS), the “afriZert” Certificate Program will offer a blended learning experience to students across Bavarian universities and from all fields of study with a focus Africa related empirical knowledge, theoretical perspectives, and practical elements. The curriculum includes coursework about the continent’s history and diversity, industry-related insights into key priority sectors, but also incorporates space for personal experiences of life and work in African contexts.

The conceptualization was informed by an expert online survey conducted between August 31 and September 30, 2021, with individuals from varying institutions from different African countries as well as a range of actors from Germany. Overall, the 101 qualified responses collected underline the need for a more profound and diversified understanding of the African continent that you be complemented by soft skills in business and intercultural communication. Thereby, a broad consensus was that a deep understanding can only be achieved through personal contacts and exchanges.
